Sega Mega LaserDisc Games Playable On Ares!

Quickly tested all the games. Can't verify quality of games as i tested while remoting in to my system, and did not have sound. 
Have it working full screen and using ahk to quit game in Launchbox. Now to figure out if there is any way to scrape data for it. 

 

Here are my findings. 

Ghost Rush! - stuck after entering name
Goku: - working
Hi-Roller Battle - can't figure out how to start mission
Hyperion (J) - Working
Hyperion (U) - Working
J.B Harold Blue Chicago - loaded, but ran slow.. all japanese (supposedly multi language though)
Myst B Test 2 111 - worked with issues
Myst 02-110 - worked but is not a complete game
Pyramid Patrol (J) - Worked
Pyramid Patrol (U) - Worked
Rocket Coaster - Worked
Space Berserker (J) - Worked
Space Berserker (U) - Worked
Time Gal - worked
Triad Stone - Worked
Vajra - loading error

Vajra gives loading error because runs on a Pc-engine bios wich actually is not emulated yet. We till now had speaked about a Mega-ld but for the laseractive there is another module, the pc-engine ld (I don-t know if this is the official name) and both systems have their exclusives games: you cannot boot vajra on a mega-ld the same as you can't boot a mega-ld game on a nec system (we need a charts of games for precision).

Yes you are probably right, I think I read somewhere that there were 24 games on the Sega Mega LD, 
I was also thinking about these famous Bios, I remember a few years ago a guy had patched pc engine cd rom bios 
among other things, so that they automatically start the games without having to press the start key, 
it would be good to be able to do the same with these bios ;)

For my part, the slowdowns or "freezes" come either from my PC's USB ports or from the HDD which is tired, 
I tested it on my home arcade machine and it works great

Not currently playable! This is an LD-ROM2 disc for the LaserActive, requiring the NEC PAC-N1/PAC-N10 module rather than the Sega PAC-S1/PAC-S10. This is here as a reference, to assist in future emulation efforts of the NEC PAC module.

 

Notes for myst.

myst 02-111

The first of the two LaserActive Myst prototypes known to exist. This game is generally more broken than the second beta, with multiple instances of incorrect footage being shown, and the main menu not showing. It does however not have as many long video sequences which fail to stop at the correct point in time. Generally the second prototype is better for playing however.
 

Myst b2 02-110 test

The second of the two LaserActive Myst prototypes known to exist. This game is one of the most advanced uses of the LaserActive hardware, making extensive use of single-frame or short animation sequences, looping sequences, and overlapping up to four distinct video streams with audio in the same disc regions.

Being a prototype, the game contains numerous errors, which also occur on the real hardware. Some notes to help with playing this title:
-Due to a game logic bug, video sequences which use frame skipping often play either 2x or 4x longer than they are supposed to, causing random following video data to appear on the screen. This happens for the main game introduction, as well as for many animation sequences in game. If you are patient, the “overrun” will eventually finish and the game will return to its correct position. This issue is likely fairly simple to fix as a hack, but it makes the game difficult to play currently.
-Unless you select a language, the game runs in a broken mix of English and Japanese. Set the language when starting a new game to correct this.
-The cursor can disappear in the pause menu. Be careful where you click.
-The game save feature appears to be non-functional.

Either you made a mistake in the access path in your .bat file, 
or you have not configured your folders under Ares, you must show Ares the paths of the bios and roms among other things

I confirmed, everything is right. If I open the game through the emulator, it works correctly. Command line no

Strange for me it starts with the .bat that I put on page 1, 
your Ares.exe file is at the root of your Arcade folder 
and your .mmi game is at the root of the Ares folder itself at the root of your Arcade folder?

Try this maybe

Exit

 

You must respect the capital letters if there are any too

Yes, there's a problem with the folder/file tree.
Place your game in the Roms folder and try this:

Start ares --system Mega LD ".\Roms\Hyperion.mmi" --fullscreen
Exit

 

Did you choose the Mega LD bios under Ares? One for the Japanese version and the other for the US in the options?

I also unchecked all the different systems that are emulated except the mega LD

I was able to test half of the titles on a MacBook Pro M3 Max 128Gb ram, wow, I have to say the emulation is flawless, no audio/video glitches, literally nothing, just perfect,

the VHS shader gives the perfect rendition on a flat screen, just, Wow... I'm impressed... waiting to finish the monster 134Gb single download for J.B. Harold and I will leave another feedback,

We are missing ROAD BLASTER!!! then we are golden...

Yes I noticed that the emulation of the Mega LD with Ares requires a lot of RAM, I have 16GB in DDR3 and it's just right, 
something else must not be running next to it otherwise it ram =) with your 128GB there is no problem :p

Still get my sound not to cooperate.... it sounds a bit 'choppy/scratchy'...  Video is playing just fine and I can play the game (eg. Hyperion) and fluctuates between 52 and 59 vps but again sound is not great.

 

cpu is at 16% and gpu is at 21% load and even the clock of gpu stays at the lowest 139 Mhz so it does not seem to be a bottleneck.

 

(32Gb, 1080ti, 8700k  ... so not the greatest rig but all other games I throw at it play fine... )

Well, counting that the system itself is 32 years old it's a bit paradoxical the need of so much power to emulate it flawlessly, pretty sure that code wise the Ares team is doing miracles already,

nevertheless we have to remember that after all this is emulation, props anyway to the aforementioned team, killer work!      Gonna post some more considerations when I finish to test the whole available catalog...

Like 3nigm4 has stated correctly, you need a beefy rack of ram, I tested it initially with a lesser powerful mac system (16Gb), the audio was beyond messy, video quite slow... it is what it is... if you know what I mean...

Ares must be like Mame, it doesn't really support the gpu, 
so everything is calculated by the processor and therefore it needs a lot of ram. 
At home too with an i7, 16gb of ram and an nvidia 1050 it's not really fluid

Ghost Rush... (Button A enter / Button B go back) Enter your name / Meet the old shop's owner (Buy-Sell-Choose target-Rank-Exit) then exit, on the following screen's map press up to select the haunted mansion... that's it... not rocket science... enjoy!

Ok, every single title works flawlessly!

About J.B. Harold, I can confirm it has dual language, the game can boot in English or Japanese according to the bios selected

( for English just go to Settings / Boot Options / Region Preference / NTSC-U > NTSC-J > PAL, then quit Ares and reopen it, et voila' ),

note, even if you select the Japanese bios, the option #2 on the title screen allows you to play with English text.

 

Further considerations... the overall quality of these LD rips is very good, surely not clean 100% (lots of noise and some sporadic micro artifacts on the image due to disc rot),

but considering how hard is to preserve a laserdisc in a perfect environment for 30 years avoiding the inevitable deterioration of the disc itself

it's indeed a bless that someone was able to digitalize such rare archive and make it public!
