Hello everybody,

I recently released Space Ace and DL2 on this forum and talked about a secret project. Well, here it is...now COMPLETE.

This is a new game for Daphne (Laserdisc emulator), using the SINGE engine. The game is based on the movie Fire & Ice (1983) by Ralph Bakshi and based on the work of Frank Frazetta.

The finished project features:

- 40 minutes of movie (33 minutes of play)

- 500 moves (about the same as DL and DL2 together).

- Advanced actions (like Mash or Double moves)

- Difficulty levels (if you choose easy mode, there are no advanced actions, but you'll miss part of the fun).

- Kid mode (only action button)

- Movie mode (just watch)

Cherry on the cake : i based my work on the conversion of the game Time Traveller by RDG (many thanks to him) but i modded the files a lot.

So, now, everything you need to create your own FMV Game is located on a single file (setupgame.singe), and you need absolutely no programming skills to do it !

I've provided a blank file (setupgameblank.singe) if you want to try and i will release a guide along with the complete game.

I hope some people will try it but, before this, try the game !

There are 2 versions 16/9 (original format) and 4/3 (with black bars, but it will work on all non 16/9 screens). It's quite big cause the videos are in high quality.

The game is ready to play, just unzip the link, and click on the bat file inside the directory Daphne

For the controls, just hit Ctrl on your keyboard or A on the pad to have some explanations.

For the menu, hit 9.

UPDATE

Update. Singe 2.0 is now available. Please check this link :

Advanced actions (like Mash or Double moves) How do you mash?

You push the Action button repeatedly (and fast).

The number depends on the difficulty level.

Note that in Easy mode, there are no Mash or Double Actions (they are replaced by Action).

Thanks a lot for the explanation, I changed some things in the menu, I put to put credits instead of being free play and I also changed the starting scene from 3 to 1, in the first scene he asks for this mash. Thank you very much

Yeah i did not checked that but you can access the menu with the key 9.

In the menu you can change many things (starting level, starting scene, difficulty).

All the controls for keyboard and pad are explained in the menu if you hit Ctrl or Button A on the pad.

thank you Karis, i like laser games

You're welcome. All of you.

It's cool to see that there is still a community for those games, and i'm really happy to add a little stone to this wall.

Fire & Ice was a great movie. Maybe not the best scenario, but the animations, musics and the backgroud paintings are just gorgeous. It would have been a great FMV game and maybe some people will discover the movie this way...

So im a bit confused here. Is Fire and Ice a "long lost" laser disc game i've never heard of or did you take a cartoon movie and turn it into a laser disc type game on your own?? Very impressed if you did and very interested on how you did it.

It's not a long lost game. I did it from scratch because i knew that in this particular cartoon, there was a lot of action.

To be honest, i remembered it from childhood, particularly the tree scene. When i thought about it i said to myself : that's it, this is your FMV game. So i found it on Youtube and began the work (i then ordered the Blu Ray for better quality). The tree scene was easy to make (apart for programming) but then i realized that it would be quite a task because it's a real movie, with dialogs, a story, etc.

So editing was the main part. I had to shorten (from 80 to 40 minutes) a lot, but that led to 2 problems :

1) i needed people to understand the story despite the editing.

2) i needed the sound (music particularly) to flow despite the cuts.

Then i realized i could put all the gaming parts in a single file and that it could help people to make their own game. I hope it'll be the case. When i had this idea i found almost no documentation on singe, so it was not easy to understand the whole thing. But, thanks to RDG, i found a way. I put a lot of comments in my setupgame.singe file. Normally it will help.

In the end i learned a lot, especially in Adobe Premiere ;)

I will provide a guide for this, but the answer is : with the notepad (a more advanced notepad like Sublime Text, which is free, is better)

Honestly, for a simple video (not 45 minutes, like i did) it's quite easy to create a game (and doing it with a simple text editor is fun too because it's really old school). Entering the moves is the funny part and it's quite quick. The "dirty work" is made in other singe files.

And i can assure you that when you launch your own game on Daphne for the first time and see just your intro scene playing, it's quite a blast !

Thanks very much. I rarely ask questions or comment. But this is amazing stuff.

I love Laserdisc movies and especially laserdisc games. so to be able to make our own with existing movies is cool

You did an amazing job. It feels like I'm actually playing a 80's laserdisc game.

Thank you. But i can assure you that it's even better with 5 more levels.

Yesterday evening i finally dealt with the last big bug (some troubles with double actions). So i'm pretty sure i will post the complete thing mid-september.

Thank you,

You won't be disappointed by the 5 remaining levels. Action is rising all along the movie!

If the idea to make another game based on the movie Tron gives you the chills, count me in for help, I can take care of the design and video parts...

PS.

Just finished to test it, brilliant, just brilliant!   ...amazing also the setup game feature, gonna definitely try it in my spare time, bravo!!

Looking forward to put my hands on the full game and the guide you have mentioned, thank you very much mate, just brilliant!

The old Tron movie or the remake ? It's a brilliant idea.

Right now i've got several quick plans (DL2) but afterwards i may look to another movie. I had one in mind but i must find it first. Tron is a good plan...

the old one of course, actually, many years ago I started (and abandoned on the way) a demo for Tron and Star Wars using DL as a base,  I'm not sure and I have to check if I still have it, if I find the videos I will post it here... well, great news for your release (which I can't wait for it), let's find a moment next week to have a chat in private, maybe by joining the efforts we can make something cool without spending too much time...

If you're interested in Cliffhanger I posted while ago in the arcade PC section my remaster from Bluray as well as the DL trilogy and Time Gal...

I found only a few screenshots from both demos, unfortunately not the video tracks... i did that 10 years ago at least...

the game was intended to be very old school (same as the first Dragon's Lair), with blinking areas instead of visual hints like the arrows and laserdisc lookalike video treatment... I was even imaging it made by Atari... lol.. .pretty geek!

Too bad you cant find them...

We could have done something cool !

Don't worry, let's talk in the next days, I don't mind doing it again from scratch, let's do this, I like your spirit!!

It's better to have a quick brainstorm first so we can split the tasks, share some ideas and then choose a clear direction.

PS.

It's gonna be pretty awesome, trust me!

As a fan of laser disc games and Fire & Ice, thanks for this, Karis.  I recently came across Jaeger's work with the ActionMax titles on Singe via the Wayback Machine.  Ideas for custom projects are taking seed.  I look forward to whatever help you provide to others.  Thanks again.
