HVG Posté(e) le 6 novembre 2025 Posté(e) le 6 novembre 2025 (modifié) In recent years, emulators like Daphne, Singe, Singe2, and Hypseus have rescued the iconic LaserDisc games from oblivion. Thanks to these advances, and the recent dumping of video files from games that were thought lost (such as those from Picmatic), the preservation of this era of video gaming has been ensured. For these games, beyond emulation, visual restoration is key. Intensive work is being carried out to upscale and clean up the original video quality (a notable example being Maximilium's Dragon's Lair project). My purpose is to join this preservation effort with my own video remasters. My philosophy is to use the best sources available today, correct colors, and clean up imperfections, applying AI upscaling in a strictly controlled manner to perfect the image without betraying the original look of the LaserDisc recordings. My first work is the NINJA HAYATE video. The base consists of the videos from the Taito LD Game Collection, to which I have corrected colors (especially the saturated red). In about five or six "death" sequences, the videos in this version show small cuts. To ensure integrity, I was forced to complete these sequences using the current Hypseus video. Therefore, you will notice small visual changes or a slight disparity in those specific sequences. I invite you to try it and send me comments for improvement. The video is compatible with Hypseus. My next target will be the American Laser Games videos, whose current quality is clearly improvable. The quality of the remasterings depends on the original sources. In the case of Dragon's Lair, there are high-quality, high-resolution sources that have already been remastered for Blu-ray. For other games, however, we have to start with the DVD source. In my case, I am going to try to achieve the maximum possible allowed by the DVD video sources (which are currently the best available for these games) and software like Topaz Video AI. 1

Having the ability to see death scenes easier now with the LUA update, I would like to point out that there seem to be frame overshoots on many of the deaths scenes. Probably only a frame or two, I did a quick video of the early one that I spotted first: https://youtu.be/J7Gxr8oGcqs?si=KnEkQKWNUPunHEU9&t=15 - @15s just after the respawn black screen. Playing through (and dying with unlimited continues) I have spotted several of these. This probably isn't helped by the fact you had to edit in death scenes, but also your video is @29.97 FPS, whereas the original is @25 FPS so this may be leading to the slight inaccuracies. The game would have been coded for a 25 FPS source. Edit: Just for comparison, I did load the old 25FPS video sources into the new LUA and I don't notice those frame overshoots, at least on that scene. Just a FYI. HVG Posté(e) le 10 novembre 2025 Auteur Posté(e) le 10 novembre 2025 I realize the problem. It's true that the issue might be caused by the difference in frames. I didn't check that the original was at 25fps. The problem is I don't think reconverting my video to 25fps is the best idea, as it could throw everything completely out of sync. I'm going to reconvert to 25fps and edit everything to see what happens
Hoagie Posté(e) le 10 novembre 2025 Posté(e) le 10 novembre 2025 The original conversion source was a PAL (25FPS) CDROM video source I believe, back in 2011. It was horrible quality, but it set the precedent for the game LUA. Unfortunately RDG is no longer around to ask. Thank you @HVG, the transfer is marvelous, if we can fix the frames, it would be a perfect transfer.
HVG Posté(e) le 10 novembre 2025 Auteur Posté(e) le 10 novembre 2025 After reviewing my edit, I see that the problem lies in small keyframe misalignments between the original version and the TaitoLD version. I believe the playback FPS is NOT the issue; rather, it is crucial to ensure the keyframes are correctly aligned just before the different death sequences. I will have to review the main videos for each sequence and adjust them manually to match those sequences. 2

The VLDP is pretty good at matching the FPS discrepancy, so this makes sense, but it was worth pointing out. Great work 👍 The VLDP will log the FPS discrepancy, quite a lot, but as with the 60 FPS Dragon's Lair sources, it shouldn't be an issue if keyframes are corrected. [ldp_vldp::nonblocking_search@455] NOTE: converting FPKS from 25000 to 29970. This may be less accurate. I didn't notice these issues while the death scenes were broken in the LUA, but now they are fixed, it will be awesome to finally have a high quality fixed working game. Thanks so much for undertaking this.

It plays fine and looks great in any media player but in retrobat hypseus singe the playback is slow and does not keep up with the audio. Is there a maximum bitrate or file size that hypseus can handle? I have a 13900ks and 4090 so it's not a hardware issue. Modifié le 25 novembre 2025 par Nit3H8wk 1

Is there a maximum bitrate or file size that hypseus can handle? I have a 13900ks and 4090 so it's not a hardware issue. Hypseus is doing a little more than a "media player", it's emulating CPU cores, overlays, INPUT control system, field blending, scanlines and bezel drawing etc and rendering (whatever resolution) video on a "single-core", in much the same way as any emulator operates on a single core for timing purposes, including MAME. Watch the CPU load in task manager when you run it. What you are trying to do is run 4k hi-bitrate video and a full emulation on a single core, so the answer to your question is: Whatever your "core" can support. It doesn't matter if you have 16 or 64 cores, the single core is the only thing that matters. Bear in mind the higher requirement you put on this, the fewer users will be able to enjoy it, including many, many SBC ARM systems. The VLDP was designed to run 720x480 non-square pixel "laserdisc" video, it can do that and very much more, but there is a theoretical "camel/straw" here dependent on current hardware. Your original upscale of Road Blaster works great on decent desktop systems, certainly not Raspberry Pi's, but you are pushing it further up the CPU core requirements if you increase resolution and bitrate. So you need to experiment and see what will be possible on hi-end, or average systems, that's down to you really and for whom you are aiming this video at, just yourself and hi-end systems, or general users. Edit: I did a little calc some time ago, on the amount of pixels you expect to be processed and rendered every time you jump a resolution. I'll post it here for context, remember this is just video not including any other emulated hardware and input/effects. Using an FPS of 30, for this example, as it's near NTSC video standards. 360×240 = 86,400 pixels - 30 times per second 640x480 = 307,200 pixels - 30 times per second 1024×768 = 786,432 pixels - 30 times per second 1440x1080 = 1,555,200 pixels - 30 times per second 1920×1080 = 2,073,600 pixels - 30 times per second 2560×1440 = 3,686,400 pixels - 30 times per second 3840x2160 = 8,294,400 pixels - 30 times per second But also let's not hijack HVG's thread. I try to stay away from any A.I. model ... because it deforms things.. this one takes time... After all that... I make the final video at 1080p with Filmora 13. HVG Posté(e) le 19 décembre 2025 Auteur Posté(e) le 19 décembre 2025 I’m currently working on a remaster of Mad Dog McCree 2. I’m using a digital capture of the original LaserDisc (the one compatible with the WinUAE emulator) as my base. Using AI, I’ve upscaled the footage with a specific focus on facial enhancement, while also fixing compression artifacts and the heavy motion blur present in the original. Additionally, I’m integrating the Spanish audio track from the Philips CD-i version (the only one available). I used AI to separate the vocals from the instrumental tracks to merge them with the highest possible quality. Let me know what you think! https://mega.nz/file/osEm3ACB#uymfD03tmukqV9C5dp0mQdQ8sZnqwSoF4PLY1tSBW8g 4
